Hi,This may seem a silly question but have any of you had your hair coloured whilst being on MTX and Hydroxy? I feel that I'd like some highlights put in my hair to perk me up a bit but someone told me that MTX in the system can cause problems if you get your hair coloured. I can't find any info about this in any of the RA information booklets.I'm on a low dose of MTX at the moment so I'm hoping it wouldn't cause any probs. Brenda.

Hi Brenda Well, with 22+years of RA behind me and goodness only knows how many hair colourants I can honestly say that I haven't had any 'reaction' from any of my medication including methotrexate and anti-tnfs. Methotrexate is known to be the possible cause of hair loss and thinning but I haven't read anything about hair dyes! Lyn x

Hi Brenda,
I too have been on mtx for years and colour my hair regularly every 6 weeks, and have had no adverse reaction to the dye. As long as you do a patch test before each use it should be safe.
Happy colouring! Doreen xx

Wouldn't have been without my hair colouring. Always good to pick me up particularly as I sufferd with hair loss due to the mtx. Hair colouring certainly made no difference. Go for it!!!

Hi Brenda, I have had RA for just over 3 years, I have also been on Sulph, and am still on MTX and Hydrox. Like the others I have regularly dyed my hair too, every 12 weeks ish. My hair thinned a bit too but it is fine now and like the others I feel good when it's cut and coloured. Happy colouring Lorna

And if anyone's interested, I had a perm a few weeks ago (I'm trying to start a new trend) and that was fine too!

Hi! I coloured my hair with that new none-drip foam colourant. I did do a strand test 48 hours (yes, i did it to the letter, just in case!! ) and the colour looks really nice! it perked me up! :)

I can't stress how important it is to do a skin patch test each time before you or your hairdresser use any hair dye even if it is your first time or you have been doing it for years.
My Mother-in-Law who is in her 80's has always dyed her hair until two years ago. She reguarly used the same hair dye no problem. One day she put on the hair dye and noticed after about five minutes that her scalp was starting to burn. She immediately washed off the hair dye but the damage was done. It had completely burnt her scalp. She was referred to a Dermatologist who said that you can dye your hair for years with no problem. However, it does leave a trace of something in your system and then one day it can tip you over the scale and cause all sorts of dermatological problems and make you allergic to them. She said if it was her she would ban all over the counter hair dyes and only allow them in hairdressers who are enforced to carry out a skin patch test 24 hours before the hair dye is applied to the scalp. She sees many, many patients who have had an adverse affect to hair dyes.
My Mother-in-Law has never got back her healthy scalp and now suffers from severe dermatitis which drives her mad.
I can't say I don't want to frighten you about hair dyes because I do. I have seen first hand the devastation they can cause. Please always run a test first.
Jackie
